Department of Floriculture, Gardens and Parks was established in the year 1969 for:-
1) Maintenance/Up gradation of gardens and parks of UT of J&K over an area of 10517 Kanals
2) Promotion of Commercial Floriculture.
Commercial Floriculture in Jammu & Kashmir involves both open cultivation and protected cultivation of flowers.
A number of small & marginal farmers as well as small traders in the un-organized sector are eking out a living from this sector.
At present 8215 growers/farmers are registered with Department of Floriculture, out of which 981 are active in the sector.
An area of 189.19 Ha is presently under floriculture cultivation with 5.39 Ha under protected cultivation, 12.14 Ha under ornamental nurseries, 56.55 Ha under aromatic plant cultivation and 112.6 Ha under open cultivation.
During the year 2021-22; about 47 lacs cut spikes and 1300 metric tons of loose flowers and 485 liters of aromatic oil have been produced.
An income of Rs. 19.77 crores was generated to the growers during the year 2021-22.
Financial Assistance to growers is provided under centrally sponsored schemes (MIDH & RKVY).
For promotion of commercial floriculture, two projects viz. Model Floriculture Centre at Jammu and Hi-tech Nursery Upgradation at Kashmir are under execution.
These centers will serve as germ plasm conservation units, training centers for growers and sale points for good quality plant material.
Awareness programmes/ exposure visits are being organized by the department to attract more and more farmers towards this sector.
The Departmentof Floriculture Gardens and Parks is organizing a flower show on 20th of May 2022 at Botanical Garden Cheshmashahi Srinagar to:-
1) Promote/showcase opportunities in commercial floriculture
2) Provide opportunities whereby growers will interact with flower enthusiasts and flower lovers
3) Showcase ornamental floral wealth of J&K
Commercial Floriculture has the potential to generate employment as well as augment the income of farmers.

b) Bulb Culture
c) Cut Flower Production
d) Aromatic Plant Cultivation
e) Value Addition of Flowers
